Samsung and Apple have been at each other’s throat for the past five years, fighting for superiority in the Smartphone market. Apple has been getting the better share of the Smartphone market recently and has broken the corporate record for the largest profit in corporate history. This shows how serious Apple is taking the “Smartphone war” and their iPhones have largely been responsible for the upsurge in recent sales. Samsung is seriously looking to bounce back with the unveiling of its Galaxy S6, after witnessing a sharp drop in sales due to poor performance of its previous flagship Smartphone – the Galaxy S5.

Design

In the past, Samsung has taken heavy criticism especially from dissatisfied customers in the area of design. Samsung has largely been accused of using cheap plastics in the designs of its low and high end smartphones. Ordinarily, these high-end smartphones have been made to look cheap, especially when carried, they don’t give the premium quality feeling that you’ll get when carrying smartphones with metallic exterior designs. The Galaxy S6 was developed with a good metal chassis, giving most of its customers that premium feel they craved.

Apart from the metal chassis, the Samsung Galaxy S6 is coated with the latest Gorilla 4 at the front and rear panels, giving it a good anti-scratch and accidental drop protection. The iPhone 6 did set a new standard with its all-metal, slim Smartphone design. The iPhone 6 is a good Smartphone but its design isn’t too different the iPhone 4. So there’s a chance that the Galaxy S6 might just compete favorably in the design war.

Screen

Samsung has upped the ante in its screen design and the screen resolutions are now in QHD standard, which is the same as the screen resolution featured in the Samsung Galaxy note 4. The Galaxy S6 screen’s resolution of 2560 X 1440 certainly gives the iPhones 6’s 1334 X 750 a hiding. But this difference in resolution has been offset by the iPhone 6 smaller screen size, which stands at 4.7 inches; meanwhile, the pixel density of the Samsung Galaxy S6’s 577ppi is greater than the iPhone 6’s 326ppi. Both phones feature quality displays, but when it comes to screen size and picture resolution, the Samsung Galaxy S6 has the edge.

Power

The iPhone 6 features an A8 dual-core 64bit chip CPU, a 1GB RAM and a powerVR GX6450 GPU. But most modern android smartphones go for at least a 2GB RAM and a quad-core CPU. The Samsung Galaxy S6 features an Exynos 7420 64-bit Octa-core, a 3GB RAM and a Mali T760 GPU. However, the iPhone 6 seems to perform faster with its smaller power specs than the Samsung Galaxy S6. Samsung isn’t taking this development lightly and has shifted its dependence on the popular Snapdragon 810 for its own chip.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 now features Samsung’s Exynos 7420 chip, which offers specs similar to those featured on the Snapdragon 810. Subsequent test now reveal that the Samsung Galaxy S6 is measuring up in terms of CPU performance with the iPhone 6, but the Galaxy S6’s Mali T760GPU still has quite a long way to go.

Storage

The microSD card feature was jettisoned during the production of the Samsung Galaxy S6, but the creation of the 32GB, 64GB and 128GB variants of the Galaxy S6 cushioned the effect of microSD card’s exclusion. On the other hand, everyone knows that iPhone smartphones do not include microSD cards by tradition but the iPhone 6 comes in the 16GB, 32GB and 128GB variants. Samsung surprised everyone with the exclusion of the microSD card from the Samsung Galaxy S6 because by its antecedents it has been including this feature. Nevertheless, the Samsung Galaxy S6 trumps the iPhone 6 in the storage war, with the iPhone 6 cheapest variant starting at 16GB while the Samsung Galaxy S6 starts at 32GB.

Camera

The iPhone 6’s 8-megapixel camera comes with a dual LED ‘True Tone’ flash and phase detection feature while the Samsung Galaxy S6 comes with a 5-megapixel front camera, a 16mega pixel rear camera, optical image stabilization and a single LED flash. The Samsung Galaxy S5 has an amazing camera; one would only imagine the additional features that would be included in the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S6 Camera. Although the Samsung Galaxy S6 still features the 16 megapixel camera that was seen in its previous flagship Smartphone, Samsung Galaxy S5, it’s expected that the Galaxy S6 camera will come with vastly improved features and capability.

However, Apple didn’t do any different as it still chose to feature the 8-megapixel camera previously seen in the iPhone 5s but the iPhone 6 camera capability and performance is simply breathtaking. It’s expected that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S6 camera would trump the camera featured on the iPhone 6.

The Verdict

The battle between the two Smartphone giants seems to be eternal with each seeking to outdo each other at every aspect and given opportunity. Many believe Samsung deliberately delayed the launch of its latest flagship Smartphone, Galaxy S6, just to make last minute inclusions that would help it counter the growing profile of the iPhone 6 and take back the market share it previously lost. From the standpoint of specs and features, I might just have to crown Samsung Galaxy S6 as the King of the Smartphone world.
