Earlier today, the world received news of the suspension of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as Central Bank Governor. A statement made on behalf of the president by Reuben Abati gives the reason for the suspension as Sanusi’s “financial recklessness and misconduct” which, Abati says “are inconsistent with the administration’s vision of a Central Bank propelled by the core values of focused economic management, prudence, transparency and financial discipline.”

Reactions to the Suspension

Since the suspension of Sanusi was announced and Deputy Director of operations, Mrs. Sarah Alade has been announced, a mixed trail of reactions has littered the Nigerian media.

According to former CBN director, Mr. Titus Okunronmu, Sanusi’s involvement in recent controversial issues might have been responsible for the suspension. He noted that Sanusi should have resigned voluntarily a long time ago instead of denting his public image with this suspension.

“The president acted very late” - Unegbu

For Mr. Okechukwu Unegbu, the former MD of the defunct Citizens Bank, the president’s decision to suspend Sanusi is a commendable one. He even says that the president acted very late in suspending Sanusi. Unegbu believes that Sanusi engaged in several activities outside the scope of the CBN.

Rumors of Zenith Bank MD as new CBN Governor…

The Daily Times has dropped an (as yet) unconfirmed story claiming that President Jonathan has appointed Godwin Emefiele, the current MD of Zenith bank as the new CBN governor. As the story goes, President Jonathan submitted Emefiele’s name to the senate hours after suspending Sanusi.

The saga continues.
