Wherever you are in the world, you will observe that the rate of auto accidents and crimes tend to be higher in the month of December, and this is largely because people want to achieve all they had not achieved in the first 11 months of the year in December; while it is also a holiday period when most people make a lot of spending buying a lot of fashionable things.

Unfortunately, criminal activities are also higher in December because criminals take no holidays, and so must you in protecting yourself and your property during this Christmas and New Year period. There are lots of security measures you can take to keep yourself and your home guarded against criminal intrusions, and some of them are listed below:

Home security while travelling –

· Do not broadcast to the whole world that you are travelling and leaving home unattended. Let a few neighbours know you won’t be around and consider leaving a set of keys with them so that they can keep a watch over your property while you’re gone.

· You can allow a friend or two or even your domestic staff to stay at home while you’re away so that they can keep watch over the house and give the impression that the house is presently occupied – deterring potential intruders and burglars.

· Secure all possible entries into your home. Lock up the windows and doors and garage and gate doors. And be sure that outside lighting and bulbs are turned on so that neighbors can see your property properly at nights.

· Use an alarm system if possible to alert neighbors of forced entry, and there are smartphone apps that will tell you that things are not right back at home even when you’re away.

· Be certain that fancy jewelries and expensive valuables are kept away from the windows and locked away.

· Let a person or two be notified of your travel plans so that they can take action if they do not hear from you for a long time.

· Be conscious of the fact that you’re not safe outside as you are in your home. So take special care and be vigilant of your surroundings at all times when you are away from home. Be suspicious of unusual movements and be very mindful when someone comes too close out of nowhere for comfort.

· Do not drink to the point of intoxication when you’re away on a trip – this makes you more vulnerable to attacks and leaves you defenceless to potential attacks.

· Keep your travel passport, cash and credit cards properly out of sight. You tempt potential criminals if you display money and travel documents or credit cards careless while on a trip.

· Be well informed about the local customs of the people when you’re visiting or the place you go to that is outside your own home-state or country. Knowing the laws and regulations of the place would help you to stay away from trouble and harassments.

· Have the phone numbers of the local police station with you when you visit a foreign land. You may also need to have the phone numbers of all security agencies in the area you’re visiting in case you get into any sudden trouble; and this is where it pays to programme such numbers with just a button, so that pressing it would alert security officers to your needs.

Personal security while shopping –

· Most shopping malls will have reinforced security during Christmas shopping and all through the holiday period, but you’re your own first chief security officer. Protect yourself at all times and in all ways possible.

· Always park your car in a parking lot that is well-lit and attended to by security operatives. Lock up your car before leaving it to go into the shopping mall, and be certain you do display valuables in the windows.

· Do not leave your car locked up with children inside of it, and do not leave the engine running when you’re not personally attending to it.

· Always have your car keys ready in your hands before leaving the shopping mall, and do not get to your car before you start fumbling in your bag for the keys. This gives attackers enough time to get to you and rob you.

· It might be better to return to your car with a personal security escort from the shopping mall or in a company of some other persons. And when you get into your car, do not idle away sorting what you’ve just bought, just drive away and go do that when you get home.

Lastly, you must also be careful and watch out for yourself during this holiday season when you attend parties with friends, travel in a public car or bus, use the ATM machine in public places, or ever need to step outside in the late evening.
