THE Senate, on Tuesday, ratified 23 new amendments to the 1999 Constitution, but retained immunity for the president and governors, contrary to the position earlier taken by the House of Representatives, which removed immunity for executive office holders.

The senators, while rejecting the proposal by the House to remove immunity for the president and governors, however, approved autonomy for local governments, by amending Section 7 of the constitution.

The Senate, in passing the harmonised version of the amended constitution, approved last week by the House of Representatives, also approved independent candidacy for future elections, when it amended sections 65 and 106 of the 1999 Constitution. The Senate also conferred immunity to legislators in respect of words they speak or write in exercise of their legislative duties, through the amendment of Section 4 of the constitution.
