Nigerian Senate on Wednesday called for compulsory medical certification to avoid occurrence of Sickle cell in the country.

Senator Gbenga Ashafa sponsored the Bill at today's plenary.

He said the “the issue on Bill is as a result of ignorance”, and that every Nigerians must go through medical certification before marriage.

While contributing, the Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu said: "we used to call them 'Ogbanje' but now we know better. A lot need to be done regarding information and awareness."

"I am aware churches don't consent to marriage without medical test, we should focus on creating awareness,” Senator Stella Oduah told colleagues at the plenary.

The Sickle Cell Anaemia Bill has been referred to the Senate Health Committee for further legislative action.
