Ex Manchester United coach Sir Alex Ferguson was on Monday punched in the groin by a man described as a “fighting drunk” outside a London train station. The man thereafter head-butted an officer who tried to detain him.

The attack took place shortly after 4pm while Sir Alex was waiting for his driver outside Euston Station in central London.

The drunk man, a 43-year-old Kevin Reynolds, staggered towards Sir Alex who initially thought he was a beggar asking for money, before he suddenly struck out with his right fist, punching Sir Alex in the groin and leaving him doubled up in pain.

He then said: “I’m sorry Fergie. I did not know it was you.”

The attack left a shocked Sir Alex with soreness and tenderness, but no further treatment was needed,

Reynolds pleaded guilty to assaulting the Manchester United manager at the City of Westminster Magistrates Court. He was remanded in custody to be sentenced at a later date at Southwark Crown Court. He may be jailed up to two years .
