Wristwatches play a key role in the life of an average individual. Apart from it being used by its wearer to keep track of time, they can be worn for other reasons e.g. fashion, status etc. Since the introduction of digital wristwatches in the early 70’s, massive improvement in technology and innovation has allowed these digital wristwatches evolve into computer-powered watches – “Smartwatches.”

Smartwatches are basically computerized wristwatches whose functionality goes beyond timekeeping. They can be used to make and receive calls, play media files, play video games, run mobile apps, pay bills and carryout high-tech activities. Some popular smartwatches include Samsung’s Gear S, LG’s “G watch”, Sony’s SmartBand Talk, etc. Currently, the latest smartwatches to hit the smartphone world are the round smartwatches produced by Huawei and LG.

Huawei Smartwatch

Huawei has unveiled its first Android smartwatch which it called the “Huawei watch.” This smartwatch has a premium classical look that makes it appear classier than a geeky looking gadget and it also has an ergonomically placed crown which contributes significantly to its classic finish. This smartwatch is currently Android’s first smatchwatch to feature a Sapphire Crystal Screen. The Huawei watch is available in silver, gold and black, and its stainless steel housing is “gold-forged” and scratch resistant. Huawei claims that its smartwatch is friendlier to those with smaller wrist because the watch is a compact 42mm. The lug width of Huawei watch is 18mm and you can choose to use either its leather or metal straps.

The Huawei watch has features common with other Android smartwatches, some of which include: Fitness and tracking, heart rate monitor, a barometric sensor and a six-axis motion sensor. Its 1.4 inch AMOLED screen has a pixel density of 286ppi, a resolution of 400 X 400 and a 10000:1 high contrast ratio. This means that you’d be getting super-crisp displays from the Huawei watch. According to Huawei, its smartwatches will come with over 40 different customizable faces, giving you various options to choose from. Huawei did not give out any clue with regards to its smartwatch pricing but said that the smartwatches will be available in the middle of 2015, in Europe, North-America and over 20 countries of the world.

LG’s Watch Urbane

On the other hand, LG has unveiled its urbane smartwatches which come in two editions. Its high-end edition comes with a brand new operating system and a 4G chip, and its basic version is powered by Android wear. The high-end edition allows its users make and receive calls as well as send text messages without the need to link with a phone.

Unlike the Huawei smartwatch, the LG Urbane 4G LTE can perform the functions of a full Smartphone independently. It allows its users make calls as well as send text messages without needing to link with a phone. The LG’s urbane 4G edition features a bruised stainless steel frame, a 1.3 inch plastic OLED display and has three buttons on its side. One of these buttons serves as an anti-theft alarm.

When pressed it notifies its owner by calling a preset phone number, and then sending the details of its wearers location using its onboard GPS. This great anti-theft feature will give thieves and robbers a second thought about stealing the LG’s urbane 4G LTE smartwatch. You might be wondering if this anti-theft feature can work in Nigeria, I tell you, it does. Apart from making calls, the LG urbane smartwatch has a push-to-talk facility and this facility allows this smartwatch to communicate, like a walkie talkie, with other compatible devices on the same data network.

Other key facilities in LG’s urbane 4G smartwatch include:

* A barometer, heart rate monitor and nine-axis accelerometer which helps to provide activity tracking readings

* An NFC (Near field communication) chip which will enable its owners to make touch-and-go payments

* Water resistant capability – this is made possible by its IP67 dust and waterproofing certification, which gives it the capability to stay submerged in water for up to 30 minutes.

According to LG, the urbane 4G smart watch is its first device to run its new wearable Platform operating system. Other future products in the stables of LG are expected to feature this new OS. LG’s urbane basic edition smartwatch is slightly thinner and features a one-side button, a smaller capacity battery, a polished metal look, but lacks NFC and GPS functionality.

The Huawei and LG Smartwatches are great high-tech digital devices. They possess unique capabilities packed in a small fashionable and stylish housing. Nigerians are eagerly awaiting the introduction of these smartwatches into the Nigerian Smartphone market, but it’s yet to be seen if these computer- powered smartwatches will be accepted in Africa’s largest economy.
