The Sokoto State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), on Wednesday said it had weeded out 4,000 `ghost’ primary school teachers from its payroll.

The Acting Chairman of the board, Prof. Musa Maitafsir said in Sokoto that this followed the recent verification of genuine teachers under the board, which went down from 26,000 to 22,000 after the verification.

He said the 4,000 `ghost’ teacher uncovered were inserted into the payroll by dubious officials.

Maitafsir said among the `ghost’ teachers was a butcher who had nothing to do with the teaching profession but was earning N57, 000 monthly as salary, for doing nothing.

He disclosed that the board had introduced a N2,000 monthly allowance for each of its 540 supervisors, and had provided 23 motorcycles to some monitoring officers, to enhance the supervision of teachers in primary schools.

The chairman also said that the state government had built new schools, rehabilitated others, recruited additional teachers and provided teaching aids to the schools.

According to him, pupils in public primary schools in the state no longer sit on bare floors.
