Nigeria’s State Security Service (SSS) had to field questions yesterday over the 21 detainees who were killed during the attempted jailbreak from their headquarters in Abuja. Some suspect that the true incident hasn’t been reported, and AFP reports that there are people who believe that the tale of the incident has been doctored by the SSS.

Marilyn Ogar, SSS spokesperson, said in a radio interview yesterday: “all of the twenty one were killed by…operatives of the DSS.”

It was previously reported that the detainees (suspected to be Boko Haram insurgents) died after one inmate had overpowered a guard and seized his weapon.

Marilyn Ogar continued in the interview, “the investigation is still ongoing. We will determine who shot who and at what point and how many were shot by whom and for what reason.”

Ogar noted that the gun snatched by the inmate had 90 rounds and that he had fired sporadically.

The gunfire which had lasted for hours in and around the SSS headquarters were warning shots by the SSS in case the detainees had outside help, Ogar explained.

Daily Trust reports that it contacted Ms. Ogar to give details about the exact circumstances in which the detainees met their deaths, but she declined further comments.

The Presidency, it will be recalled, downplayed the incident, but several media outlets are unconvinced by the official version of the events that went down that Sunday.

Premium Times, in its own report, wondered why so much ammunition and heavy weaponry was required to subdue one inmate.

AFP observed that a security breach at the SSS HQ would be an embarrassment for the government, especially if it involved the Boko Haram insurgents.
