The African Development Bank (AfDB) Group has approved a grant of 5.4 million dollars for an assessment study for a water supply and sanitation programme for towns in South Sudan.

The bank said the grant would benefit some 170,000 people living in 11 small and medium-sized towns in South Sudan.

The financial assistance is said to have been extended from the bank's ''Fragile States Facility''.

It said ``the low levels of access to safe and potable water and adequate sanitation, coupled with poor hygiene awareness has been the principal cause of water-related diseases such as diarrhea, cholera and guinea-worm in South Sudan.’’

The bank stated that the grant would finance the feasibility study and detailed designs for water supply and sanitation infrastructure facilities in the identified towns.

Furthermore, the bank said, the study would cover aspects of water resources management, knowledge management and capacity building among local institutions, as well as facilities for monitoring and evaluation.

“The study is anticipated to be concluded in September 2015 and the knowledge generated will enrich AfDB’s continued learning process and its support to African countries, especially in fragile states.''
