On Thursday, State Security Service (SSS) operatives reportedly seized a a 20-foot container fully loaded with high-calibre ammunition in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital. The intercepted ammunition was packed in many iron boxes in the container.

The vessel carrying the lethal cargo, MV Iron Trader, came from Panama in Central America. The captain, agent plus six crew members were promptly arrested and said to be undergoing interrogation.

Senior officials of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) in Port Harcourt are yet to issue an official statement on the incident.

The SSS’s interception of the ammunition is coming at a time when full blown militancy is threatening to return to Rivers state.
