Fierce fighting is raging between Syrian rebels and the Syrian army in Latakia on Syria’s coastline. Rebels positioned in remote enclaves of Latakia's mountains launched the "battle for the liberation of the Syrian coast" a couple weeks ago.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights Mr. Rami Abdel Rahman said “massive reinforcements” were sent to Latakia to “bomb rebel areas heavily.”

State television said the army had reclaimed Kharata, Janzuriyeh, Baluta, Baruda and Hambushiyeh which were rebel positions.

But according to Rahmn , "the army has only been able to secure the outskirts of some villages. The battles are ongoing and they are fierce".

He said scores of jihadist are being killed in the fighting at Latakia, including a Jihadist leader.

Other rebel areas struck by the army are the northwestern province of Idlib, Daraya and Zabadani near Damascus, and Deir Ezzor city.

According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people in 29 months have been killed by the Syrian war
