Sports Team Nigeria to get $7,000 for every gold won at the Commonwealth Games

Each Nigerian athlete who wins a gold medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games will be rewarded with the sum of $7,000 by the National Sports Commission(NSC).

Director General of the NSC Gbenga Elegbeleye has assured Team Nigeria that plans have been perfected to make sure that they are happy and that everything they need to excel at the Games are provided for them.

The Commonwealth Games kicked off on Wednesday in Glasgow,Scotland with the opening ceremony held at the Celtic Football Stadium.

Elegbeleye while meeting with Team Nigeria in Glasgow announced the monetary reward for every medal won.

$7,000 dollars (N1.1million) for gold, $ 4,000 for silver and $3,000 for every bronze medal won.

“I want you to know that the government have your welfare at heart. We want you all to go out there and do your best for your country,” Elegbelye was quoted to have told the athletes.

Nigeria's best outing at the Commonwealth Games was in Canada 1994,where they won 37 medals(11 gold,13 silver and 13 bronze medals)
