Tecno Mobile has made giant strides in the field of Telecommunication in Nigeria. They have analyzed the African market and have seen the need to provide affordable smartphones to the lowest earning individuals on the continent. They have successfully carved out a niche for themselves in the low end Smartphone category by unveiling an array of low-end to budgets smartphones, which seem to provide comparable features and quality as the popular high end devices.

The latest Tecno budget Smartphone to hit the market in the last two quarters of 2014 was the Tecno Phantom Z, also known as Tecno A7. The Phantom Z was heavily promoted by Tecno Mobile during the 2014 FIFA world cup period, but it hit the Nigerian market in the latter part of 2014. This Smartphone comes with amazing, high-end features, which combined perfectly to place Tecno Mobile on a pedestal that made them comparable with high end smartphone manufacturers.

Design

Looking at the Phantom Z from afar, you may be thinking it is the HTC One or a Samsung Galaxy S5 and the reason isn’t far-fetched, and that’s because so much effort was put into designing the body frame of the Phantom Z. The exteriors are mainly made from plastics, with metallic coverings running around the edges. This 5.2-inch Smartphone is quite portable and nimble, and you can hold and operate it using a single hand. Surprisingly, the Phantom Z’s front facing camera comes with a flash which is quite uncommon with most of its previous editions.

Camera

Tecno Mobile took mobile photography to a whole new level with the inclusion of a 16-mega Pixel camera with dual flash on the A-7. However, featuring a higher resolution camera doesn’t necessarily translate into improved picture quality, but the Tecno Phantom Z’s picture quality is quite impressive. The colours aren’t excessive and they look quite natural, and like high end smartphones, the Phantom Z’s contrast is quite deep and sharp, meaning that you’d be getting quality displays of your favourite photos and videos. Tecno also included an 8-mega pixel front facing camera on the Phantom Z, which means more fun for Selfie enthusiasts.

Display

The Tecno A-7 comes with a 5.2 inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 1920 X 1020. This ensures that you get satisfactory experience view multimedia files on the Phantom’s Z full HD screen. The Phantom Z’s screen comes with AMOLED technology, and this technology helps the Phantom Z deliver super bright displays especially at night. Watching videos and other media contents is simply breathtaking and the quality can be compared with those featured on other high-end Smartphones.

Software and basic features

When it comes to multitasking, no other Tecno device does it better than the Phantom Z and very few budget smartphones can match the speed and multitasking ability of this Smartphone. The Phantom Z is powered by a 2GHz Octa-core processor and runs on the android 4.4 Kitkat version, and can also perform an OTA update on user’s request. The software interface is quite fluid, smooth and responsive, making it easy to navigate, browse and switch between apps effortlessly. You can get quick access to notifications relating to your missed calls and text messages by simply pulling down the notification bar.

Memory

The Tecno Phantom Z comes with a 2GB RAM and an internal memory of 32GB which isn’t expandable. This is definitely one of the major drawbacks about the Phantom Z, Which means that you might have to monitor the size of files you download on your Phantom, most especially if you are into heavy media files download, video recording and gaming.

Battery Life

Just like most high end devices such as iPhones and some Samsung smartphones, the Phantom Z comes with a non removable Li-Ion battery. To be fair, the Phantom Z battery will most likely carry you through a complete day on full charge and that is if you use the device minimally. Heavy users will definitely need to carry along their power banks as well as their wall chargers so as to prevent a situation whereby their batteries die out on them when they least expect.

Prices

This is perhaps one of the pivotal factors to consider before purchasing a Smartphone. The average Smartphone user will really need to compare prices of the Smartphone they intend to purchase from the various online stores as well as brick and mortar stores before making their final purchase decision. By far, the best online stores to consider when purchasing the Tecno Phantom Z are Jumia and Konga, and these are their respective prices.

Jumia – N57,030

Konga – N65,500

Prices stated as at 5/5/2015

The Tecno Phantom Z is currently Tecno Mobile’s flagship Smartphone and remains one of its best smartphones produced till date. The Phantom Z comes with an array of high-end features that is designed to provide high level performance at an affordable price. With the introduction of the Phantom Z, Tecno Mobile is sending out a strong message of defiance, to the Top-dogs in the Smartphone industry, that it is a force to reckon with in Smartphone development and technology.
