Today, Leadership newspaper did a piece on ten leading farms in Nigeria and their owners. We are doing a recap of the article with a link to point the reader on his way.

As the article goes, it explains that before crude oil became the main stay for the country, agriculture was our saving grace. Although the picture is one vaguely wafting in our distant memory, there was once a time when food was cheap, available and plentiful in Nigeria. As Leadership puts it, “people…did not go hungry, except in extreme cases occasioned by a serious factor.’

Then the oil boom came, and a paradigm shift began. It becomes evident in the average Nigeria’s career choice. Even graduates from the field of Agriculture would rather work in oil and gas. In hindsight, Leadership observes, “little did people know that those who remained in agriculture would today be raking in millions and billions of naira, as their products now grace both local and international markets.”

Leadership goes on to list ten of the leading farm owners in Nigeria today thus:

1. OLUSEGUN OBASANJO [OBASANJO FARMS]

2. ABDULSALAMI ABUBAKAR [MAIZUBE FARMS]

3. MURTALA NYAKO [SEBORE FARMS]

4. USMAN DANTATA JR. [ANADARIYA FARMS]

5. SIR. JOSEPH I.A. ARUMEMI-IKHIDE [OJEMAI FAMRS]

6. ARINZE ONEBUNNE [JOVANNA FARMS]

7. DR. OLATUNDE AGBATO [ANIMAL CARE SERVICES KONSULT]

8. ABDULLAHI ADAMI [NAGARI INTEGRATED DAIRY FARM]

9. ALHAJI WAHAB IYANDA FOLAWIYO [FOLAWIYO FARMS LIMITED]

10. PETER ADENIYI [ANU-OLUWA FARMS]

This may well be all the conviction you need that the agricultural sector is, indeed, alive and throbbing with potential. If you are looking for something to invest in, why not try agriculture? It’s worth a shot, at least.
