Unlike the Middle East, South Asia, and Latin where the United States installed its bases in pretext of fighting terrorism and insurgencies; Africa, led by Nigeria, has continued to refuse US military bases on African soil.

African leaders’ argument is that the continent has had more than its own share of foreign occupation and interference in Africa. That reinforces the fear of ‘’a step-by-step military strategy’’ being used to reoccupy the continent.

Even its efforts to station its military base in faraway island of Sao Tome and Principe – some 250 km off the Gulf of Guinea – was not taken lightly by Nigeria and other ECOWAS members for the fear that it would give Washington power to control oilfields in Nigeria, DRC, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and Cameroon.
