LG mobile has always been at the forefront of things in the high-end category for the last few years. Although they don't have the pomp and pageantry of high-end smartphones like Apple and Samsung Mobile, they are by every inch worthy contenders in terms quality and sophistication.
LG has taken creativity through the roof by including a Cartridge-like casing for the G5’s battery at the bottom of the smartphone. To remove the battery, all you just need to do is to pull the magic slot at the lower part of the smartphone. Those that love using desktop or external chargers will find the cartridge-like battery casing handy. Well, this is a hands-on review, so it's still too early to test the LG G5 thoroughly and draw up a comprehensive review. However, we will be going through a few features that have been scrutinized so far.
Design
Just like Samsung, LG Smartphones have been pummeled by critics for their plastic designs, most especially its previous flagship, the G4. The thing about Smartphones with plastic build is that they always look and feel cheap to users. The crave for metallic, titanium finishing have risen in recent times. LG mobile, not wanting to be left out, discarded the plastic exteriors featured in the G4 for an all-metal body in the G5. However, the G5 still doesn’t ooze the premium appeal of the iPhone 6S or the Samsung Galaxy S7. Unsurprisingly, this disparity in design can be attributed to the years of experience Apple and Samsung have gotten under their belt in premium Smartphone designs.
There is a thin metallic rim that goes around the edges of the LG G5, and it gives the G5 a premium looking appearance. LG doesn't come with the prominent antenna lines found in most Apple smartphones; however, it disguises it antenna slits using Micro-Dizing technology. The LG G5 comes in a variety of attractive colours that include gold, pink, silver and titan (grey).
Display
The LG G5 comes with a 5.3-inch display and with QHD resolutions put at (1440 X 2560). These specs are some of the very best in the industry, and you'd wonder if there is any need to improve them any further. With the Pixel Per Inch standing at 554 (PPI), the LG G5 display does a good job in rendering HD videos and pictures with excellent accuracy. However, its display quality isn't as polished as the Super AMOLED technology utilized in high-end Samsung smartphones but good enough to occupy a good spot in the high-end Smartphone category. This Smartphone's display also features "always-on display functionality," which is a tremendous upgrade to its IPS LCD. However, it's only until the phone's background light goes out that the always-on display functionality activates.
The always-on display functionality is also a prominent feature of the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge display, except for the fact that they offer fewer notifications than the LG G5. While you'll get major notifications like text messages, phone calls on the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge when the Always-on display is activated; the LG G5 shows you all your notifications.
Performance
When it comes to software and specs, the LG G5 matches the Samsung Galaxy S7 in almost every department. To start with, the LG G5 is powered by Qualcomm’s latest processor and a 4GB RAM. These specs mean that the LG G5 is extremely fast and efficient when it comes to processing files and data. Both companies use the Qualcomm Snapdragon chip which is extremely efficient and powerful, unsurprisingly they are both Korean. The LG G5 comes with a built-in 32GB internal memory, which can be expanded to 2TB using a microSD card.
Camera
LG surprised everyone in this aspect. Who would have thought of a smartphone featuring two rear cameras? That's right! The LG G5 comes with dual cameras, which includes a 16MP and an 8MP camera. Extremely innovative, I must say. To stand out of the crowd, you need to be different, and that's what LG did. The LG G5 camera comes with an impressive 135 degrees wide viewing angle, which is clearly ahead of that of a human, which is put at 120 to 124 degrees. This ability means that the LG G5’s camera can capture more details than the human eye. Differences in camera quality between the 8MP and 16MP wouldn’t be noticed by glancing at it on your smartphone unless you scrutinize them on a PC.
Battery
The LG G5 comes with 2800MAH battery, which is down from the 3000mAh capacity battery included in the G4. We must understand that there is no positive correlation between battery size and performance. What matters is the technology employed onboard, and the LG 5G comes with a much more energy efficient processor than its predecessor. As earlier stated, the battery is inserted and removed like a cartridge or memory card. Unlike most smartphones, removal and insertion of its battery is done at the bottom of the smartphone. However, it's still too early to analyze critically, battery performance. But you should, at least, expect to get close to 24hrs service based on moderate usage.
The LG G5 certainly stands tall when compared to other top high-end smartphones. Innovation and creativity were taken to a whole new level in the LG G5, most notably in the Battery and Camera hardware designs. Some other high points are the 4GB RAM, metallic exterior finishing, 4GB RAM, Snapdragon 820 processor, all of which combine perfectly to make the LG G5 the envy of many and the Smartphone to beat this 2016.
