Police in India have yesterday arrested Yasin Bhatkal, the alleged head of the Indian Mujahideen (IM) militant group, Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde told reporters this morning.

The Militant group is believed to be behind deadly blasts in more than four cities in the past 3 years, killing more than 50 people and injuring hundreds.

Mr Bhatkal, according to officials is a co-founder of the home-grown group and is one of the most wanted men in the country.

He was detained close to the border with Nepal and is in custody, being questioned by the Bihar police. Mr Shinde said.

His real name is believed to be Muhammad Ahmad Zarar Siddibappa, but he uses a number of aliases.

Mr Bhatkal was arrested along with an IM colleague who has been identified as Asadullah Akhtar.
