The Director, Anti-human Trafficking Unit of Ghana Police Service, Patience Quaye, said on Thursday that two Chinese nationals would be tried for allegedly trafficking seven Vietnamese into Ghana.
The director said that the two were arrested following surveillance mounted on their activities since November by the police with the support of an ace journalist.
Quaye, who named one of the two Chinese as Hwan Hui, 49, said that the two were part of an international ring of human traffickers.
She said that they were arrested by the police in their base in Takoradi.
``The suspects promised to send the Vietnamese women to work in a factory in the U. S. but rather brought them to Takoradi, Ghana, where they worked as prostitutes for several months,’’ she added.
Quaye said that the police had initially received information from the International Police Agency (Interpol) that some Vietnamese women were being trafficked to an unknown destination, and alerted the police to be on the lookout.
She said that after tracking some contact numbers provided by Interpol, it was realised that the women had been trafficked into Ghana.
Quaye said that the suspects would be prosecuted in Ghana, and if found guilty would be jailed.
``The victims will then be taken through some counseling session by the Gender Ministry before they will be returned to Vietnam,’’ she said.
