The UN Security Council on Thursday expressed horror and anger over the mass killings of hundreds of civilians in the town of Bentiu, capital of Unity State in South Sudan.

This is contained in a statement issued in New York by the 15-member council president for the month of April and Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Prof Joy Ogwu.

The security council threatened sanctions against those responsible for the continued deadly violence in South Sudan.

"The members of the Security Council indicated their willingness to take additional measures, should attacks on civilians and violations of the (January 23) Cessation of Hostilities Agreement continue," the statement said.

According to the UN, the mass violence in Bentiu on April 14 and 16 resulted in the death of more than 200 men, women and children.

The council also deplored systematic targeting of civilians, based on their ethnicity and the execution of civilians in a mosque, church, and hospital.

It expressed concern that in South Sudan, radio broadcasts had been used to foment hate and sexual violence.

It also said it was gravely concerned by the growing humanitarian crisis in a UN camp in Bentiu, where more than 23,000 people were seeking shelter.

According to the UN, no fewer than 1 million people have fled their homes since fighting erupted in December between troops backing President Salva Kiir and soldiers loyal to his sacked deputy, Riek Machar.
