The United Nation’s Children’s Fund on Tuesday in Abeokuta, Ogun State, warned about the danger of Nigeria not being able to check the rising mortality rate of children less than five years old. Hence, 158 out of every 1,000 children born in Nigeria will die before they celebrate their fifth birthday.

The UNICEF country representative , Ms. Jean Gough expressed this concern during the 14th edition of the Zonal Network for Children meeting, which has the theme: “Fulfilling the rights of children: Our responsibility,” organized by the Ogun State Government, in collaboration with the UNICEF B-FIELD Office.

Gough added that despite the fact that the Millennium Development Goals(MDG) target date is around the corner, Nigeria has failed to improve on the rate of infant mortality. Hence, all hands must be on deck to hasten the progress.
