Sports Volleyball qualifiers: Nigeria lose first game to Algeria

Nigeria's female Volleyball team yesterday lost their first game of the 2014 FIVB Women’s World Championship qualifiers against Algeria.

It is their first game of a round robin qualifiers which will see Nigeria also play four other African countries: Botswana, Cameroon, Dr Congo and Egypt.

The Nigerian girls were beaten in straight sets: 13-25,16-25,13-15 losing 0-3 to the host country.

The winner of the qualifiers will qualify for the World championship in Italy from 23 September to 12 October 2014.

Meanwhile former national Volleyball player and member of the Nigeria volleyball federation Alhassan Yakmut, has blamed Nigeria's poor performances in the sport on poor programming.

He equally took a swipe on the confederation of African volleyball (CAVB) for only concentrating on elections and how long they will stay in office.

''The challenge between CAVB and the Nigeria Volleyball Federation is in terms of programming, by now they should have conducted a swot analysis of of Volleyball on the Continent and come out with a long term plan, what we hear is successful elections and no progress,'' Yakmut told Brila FM.

''If we have the talents then we have to support them with robust technical preparation, we need a very robust grassroots programme'' he concluded.
