Water scarcity is hitting hard in Bauchi township as water vendors are making brisk business as a result.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that most of the public taps in the town had gone dry in the last two weeks.

According to NAN, the cost of a Jerry-can of water had increased from N20 to N70, following the scarcity of water.

Usman Yusuf, a water vendor, told NAN that they had to pay huge amount of money to fetch water from private borehole owners.

He explained that the situation had forced them to affect 100 per cent increase in the price of Jerry-can of water.

Some residents, who spoke to NAN, said that the situation was worrisome, especially now that water was vital to sustain the fight against communicable diseases.

The General Manager, Bauchi State Water Corporation, Mr Aminu Gital, while reacting to the situation, attributed the scarcity to disconnection power at the main water treatment plant in Gubi town and other plants.

Public utilities do not last... Can't remember the last time time the public tap in my village gushed out water.
