Sports Wawrinka beat Berdych to qualify for the finals of Australian Open

Stanislas Wawrinka has for the first time in his career qualified for a grand slam final after defeating Tomas Berdych in their semi-final game at the Australian Open.

The Swiss player followed up his impressive quarter-final victory over Novak Djokovic,to boot out Berdych 6-3 6-7 (1-7) 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-4).

Wawrinka started brightly, effortlessly taking the first set. However Berdych clawed his back, taking the second set which ended in a tie-break.

However, the seventh seeded Wawrinka closed out the contest, winning the last two sets which were equally decided by tie-breaks.

"It's amazing, I'm so happy to be here. I didn't expect to make a final in a Grand Slam, and it's happening. I'm just really happy" Wawrinka said after the game.

He will now play the winner of the big game between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in the finals on Sunday.
