Sports Wayne Rooney apologises for red card

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has apologised for his red card he picked in their last game against West Ham last Saturday.

Rooney went from hero to villain in the match, netting the first goal that took his tally to 176(third highest all-time goalscorer) but he put his team in harm's way when he kicked Stewart Downing.

"It was probably the right decision," Rooney said. "Of course I did [apologise]."

"I saw the West Ham player making a counter-attack and I tried to break-up the play, but I just misjudged it," Rooney said.

"I am just grateful that the lads were able to hold on."

Rooney will now miss United's games against Everton,West Brom and Chelsea next month.

Owing to United's lack of action in Europe,Rooney could miss the whole of October through suspension.
