Arsenal on Sunday suffered a humiliating 2-0 defeat at White Hart Lane, ensuring they will finish below Tottenham Hotspur for the first time in 22 years.

After a goal-less first 45 minutes Dele Alli poked into the net for the home side before Harry Kane made it two from the spot after a controversial penalty decision from the referee less than three minutes later.

Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger speaking to Sky Sports after the game said:

"Yes, overall they deserved the win. Because first of all they scored two goals and we didn't but it was an even game until the first goal. Then straight away after that we conceded the penalty. You could see we were affected by that and Spurs looked more dangerous than before.

"And as we didn't come back to 2-1 they were comfortable. We did not create enough but that is down to Spurs as well, they were sharper than us physically and we were too restricted in our game. At the moment we are not back to the level of confidence we need to play in the way we can. The desire was there but we lacked something today."

On Spurs finishing above Arsenal:

"Well done to them, but when you start the championship the target is not to finish above Spurs, it is to fight for the title. In 20 years it happened once. Mathematically it has to happen once. We are not happy with it but we don't compare ourselves to Spurs, we compare ourselves to where we want to be."

Unsettled, he left his Sky Sports interview early, pushing past the interviewer and out of the room.

Speaking to BBC Sports, he said:

"Yes, we did lose the game in a very quick space of time, and after that it took us time to recover. But overall Spurs deserved to win, we have to accept that and analyse it well. Of course it is very disappointing, but the target at the beginning of the season is not to finish above Spurs, it is to win the league.

"They deserve it. We have a cup final to play, we have to fight for a place back in the top four. We have to give everything in every game. We couldn't afford to lose the game today we didn't score today, we didn't score at Palace or West Brom, we have to play more and create more than we did today."
