An Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court has arraigned one Chinyere Okonkwo, a 43-year-old woman for the alleged theft of a two-day-old baby from Abia State. She was suspected to have stolen the child by passengers of the bus she had been travelling in when she showed no evidence of being able to console the child as it cried inconsolably on her way to Lagos State.

When the suspect was questioned by a Police officer on the bus, she allegedly said that the mother of the child resided in Lagos, where she was going to meet her. But the statement was even more suspicious, according to Punch Newspaper, which led the Policeman to direct that the bus be driven to the nearest police station and the suspect held and questioned further where it was then revealed that Okonkwo and another accomplice of the name Ogbu Orji, had stole the baby.

Okonkwo and Orji were both arraigned on four counts of kidnapping and child stealing. The true mother of the child was yet to be discovered by the police.
