Justice Kudirat Jose at an Ikeja High Court on Monday ordered that Nifemi Ayinla, 23, be remanded in prison custody, pending the hearing and determination of his bail application, fixed for Dec. 2.

Ayinla was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, charged with defrauding Ms Gina McCoy, an American woman of $25,000.

Ayinla, who lives at No. 115, Obafemi Awolowo Way, Ikeja, is facing a four-count charge of possession of false documents and obtaining money by false pretences.

The EFCC counsel, Mr Taqiyudeen Aribi, alleged that the accused had committed the offences between January and May in Ikeja.

Aribi alleged that Ayinla had claimed to be Andrew Edmund, an Italian American businessman, to defraud McCoy, through an internet love scam.

He said Ayinla had obtained $25,000 from McCoy, under the guise of using it to finish his project in Nigeria, where he claimed to be on a business trip.

The prosecutor said the accused also had in his possession, documents containing false pretences, with numerous fraudulent scam e-mails, addressed to McCoy.

Ayinla however pleaded not guilty.
