Zimbabwean Teachers Forced to Contribute for Mugabe's Birthday

Cash-strapped Zimbabwean teachers are being forced to contribute money towards the 90th birthday celebrations of President Robert Mugabe’s ,which will be held later this month.

According to News Day, teachers in Mashonaland East Province said they had been forced to contribute $2 each towards Mugabe’s birthday party.

Mugabe’s Zanu-PF party is planning to raise at least $1m for the birthday celebration. Zanu-PF's spokesperson Rugare Gumbo has denied having knowledge of the taxing of the teachers.

However, Raymond Majongwe, Progressive Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe secretary-general is insisting that members of his union had been approached by Zanu PF activists and ordered to pay the money.

Mugabe was born on 21 February, 1924 but the celebrations will be held on 23 February. Mugabe is currently the oldest head of state.
