Former President of the United States, Jimmy Carter, on Tuesday said China's development was no threat to the U.S and that peaceful competition between the two would benefit the world economy.

Carter made the remarks while addressing the 8th Barnett-Oksenberg Lecture on Sino-American relations in Shanghai.

He said that the official establishment of Sino-U.S. diplomatic relations 35 years ago had brought enormous benefits to people in the two countries and made the seven billion people in the whole world live a better life.

Carter, then U.S. president, and late Chinese leader, Deng Xiaoping witnessed the official establishment of bilateral diplomatic ties on Jan. 1, 1979.

"The world economy is big enough to allow the development of both countries. The issues currently facing the two countries are less complicated and thorny than those 35 years ago.

"The two countries should boost exchanges and cooperation, particularly in tackling the global climate change’’, he said.
