Sports Davis Cup: Federer whitewashed by Monfils

Gael Monfils stunned Roger Federer in Lille, beating the Swiss player to draw France level at Davis Cup finals.

Federer is still recovering from a back injury that saw him miss the finals of the ATP World Tours in London, but it was barely an excuse to the margin of his loss to Monfils.

Monfils won the contest in straight sets, defeating Federer 6-1 6-4 6-3 which squared the French against Switzerland.

Stanislas Wawrinka had earlier in the day given the Swiss a 1-0 lead following his thrilling game against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga which he won 6-1 3-6 6-3 6-2.

Action will resume today with the best-of-five contest in the doubles match event.

While there will be reverse matches in the singles on Sunday: Federer will be taking on Tsonga, while Wawrinka will do battle with Monfils.
