The federal government of Nigeria has announced that it's N-Power scheme, which aims to employ unemployed graduates, has been oversubscribed by over 100%.

The government had announced earlier that the portal to the recruitment scheme would be re-opened on the 13th of June, 2017.

Five days later (Sunday, June 18) the number of applicants in the scheme was more than 753,307, exceeding the number of both graduate and non-graduate applicants in 2016's 2-month registration window by 2307.

The federal government however, has no plan to employ more than the 300,000 it has made provisions for according to the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Job creation, Mr Afolabi Imoukhuede.

He said the numbers were a landmark, and that the selection process would maintain same transparency as in 2016. He further added that everyone to be engaged this year must satisfy the recruitment requirements such as age and academic qualification as well as completion of the NYSC scheme, which hints that things could be tougher this year.

He said the reason for the large number of applications might be because “a lot of graduates now have faith in the scheme unlike last year when many were a bit skeptical and refused to apply.’

However, another reason could be the economic situation in the country. Thousands are jobless due to Nigeria's not-so-okay economy and many others are losing their jobs. This creates the environment for Nigerians to be desperate for a job, any kind of job- a N30,000 per month one included.
