The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State has reinstated Chief Ikeje Asogwa as its new chairman.

Asogwa was reinstated at the extra-ordinary meeting of the party’s state executive committee in Enugu on Friday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the reinstatement followed the nullification of his earlier appointment by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.

The communiqué of the meeting signed by the Publicity Secretary of the party in the state, Dr Okey Eze, said the reinstatement was in line with the party’s constitution which states that ``where a vacancy occurs in any of the party offices, the committee shall appoint another person from the area where the officer originated pending the conduct of election’’.

The communique also said the request by 86 of the 109 members of the committee of PDP in the state, which represented more than two-thirds of the SEC membership empowered to hold an extra-ordinary meeting led to the reinstatement.

"Ikeje Asogwa shall remain the chairman of the party in the state pending the election of another chairman at the state congress to be convened for that purpose,’’ it said.

The communiqué charged the new chairman to take necessary measures to oversee the conduct of a smooth and successful primaries and congresses and ensure the victory of the party at all levels in the 2015 elections.

The meeting was attended by Gov. Sullivan Chime, his deputy, Rev. Ralph Nwoye, the Speaker of the state assembly, Mr Eugene Odo, and a board of trustees member, Chief Ken Nnamani, among others.
