Nigeria - Mr. Tony Ashikodi and his party, the Peoples Democratic Party, have challenged the victory of Dr. Femi Gbajabiamila in the March 28, 2015 elections.

The party has filed a petition at the Lagos State National Assembly ‎Election Petition Tribunal in Ikeja seeking the disqualification of Gbajabiamila as the elected lawmaker representing Surulere Federal Constituency 1 of the state in the House of Representatives.

The Independent National Electoral Commission had declared Gbajabiamila of the All Progressives Congress, winner of the election with 21, 715 votes, ahead of Ashikodi who garnered 14, 550 votes.

But Ashikodi and the PDP had approached the tribunal, led by Justice C.U Anwuka, with claims that the election was characterised with irregularities and conducted in breach of INEC’s guidelines.

At the Monday’s proceedings, lawyers for Gbajabiamila and INEC, Dele Adeoti and C.N. Olaitan respectively, applied for the withdrawal of certain applications that they had filed before the court.

Justice Anwuka consequently struck out the applications.

The tribunal thereafter adjourned till July 27 to hear the substantive case.
