Prof Attahiru Jega, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) may be jailed because of his refusal to publish a candidates list presented to the commission by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Anambra state.

The chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Attahiru Jega stands the risk of being sent to jail over his refusal to accept the list of candidates for the National and State Assemblies from the Ejike Oguebego-led Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State.

The Oguebego faction had initiated contempt proceedings against Jega for allegedly flouting a judgement of a Federal High Court in Abuja in relation to the outcome of the National Assembly primaries held in the state.

In a motion for committal filed by the party on December 31, 2014, Jega was accused of disobeying a December 5, 2014 judgement restraining INEC from accepting “any delegate list or nominated candidates” from the congresses or primaries conducted by the caretaker committee purportedly set up by the party’s national leadership to manage the affairs of the Anambra PDP.
