New UN Ebola Mission Head Appointed by Bank Ki-Moon

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon on Friday appointed Mr Ismail Ahmed of Mauritania as his new Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER).

This is contained in a statement issued by Ban's Spokesman, Mr Stephane DuJarric in New York.

According to the statement, as Special Representative, Ahmed will work closely with the Special Envoy on Ebola, Dr. David Nabarro and with the governments of Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone and other partners.

Ahmed succeeds Mr Anthony Banbury of the U.S., who would return to New York in early January 2015.

It stated that Ahmed would be bringing his over 28 years of development and humanitarian assistance's experience with the UN in Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe.

Ahmed is currently the Deputy Special Representative of the secretary-general and Deputy Head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), UN Resident Coordinator, Humanitarian Coordinator and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative.
