Pep Guardiola suffered his first loss as a coach on his return to Santiago Bernabeu seeing Bayern Munich beaten 1-0 by Real Madrid in the first leg of the semifinal clash in the UEFA Champions League.

With different ambitions from both sides,Bayern looking to become the first team to defend the Champions League, and Real hunting for the elusive 'La Decima', they came into the game hoping to march on in their quest to achieve their dreams.

Bayern Munich had commanded the bigger percentage of ball possession but faltered in translating it to goalscoring opportunities.

Madrid on their part sat back, content with having Bayern dictate play, but the Spanish team looked dangerous each time they were on the break.

And it did pay off for Madrid,Cristiano Ronaldo picked put a run of Fabio Coentrao and the left fullback squared the ball in the box for Karim Benzema to simply tap in for 1-0.

Ronaldo had an opportunity to double the lead, but he was a little bit hesitant when played through on goal, and the Portuguese star ballooned his effort into the stands.

Another opportunity came to Madrid, this time to Angel Di Maria who was unmarked in the box but he equally blew his chance way above Manuel Neuer's goal post.

Bayern passed the ball around but their was no penetration, both Frank Ribery and Arjen Robben not given much space to break in.

Ronaldo tried a long range shot but couldn't beat Neuer who got a touch to divert the ball out of play.

With some substitutions,Bayern infused some urgency in attack, yet they couldn't breach Madrid's rear guard.

The closest Bayern came in the second half was when Mario Goetze's shot in the box was well saved by Iker Casillas who was well positioned to pull the save.

Madrid would be content with the result travelling to the Allianz Arena next week with the lead, knowing that Bayern would come out to score in order to stand a chance of going through.
