Nigeria's Bank of Industry, BoI, is doing a good thing.

Electricity has been a major problem for Nigerians for decades. The country suffers epileptic power supply and since independence hasn't been able to generate more than 5000MW while it needs over 80,000MW to function optimally.

The Bank of Industry, in conjunction with the United Nations, have however launched a scheme aimed at electrifying several communities in the nation.

The idea is to offer 24/7 power supply to several communities (most of them disconnected from the national grid) with the aid of solar installations.

The communities in these Local Government Areas have been electrified:

1.Bisanti, Katcha LGA, Niger State

2.Idi-ita/Onibambu, Ife North LGA, Osun State

3.Kolwa, Kaltungo LGA, Gombe State

4.Onono, Anambra West LGA, Anambra State

5.Obayantor 1, Ikpoba Okha LGA, Edo State.

Acting MD/CEO of the Bank of Industry, Waheed Olagunju said the bank is ready to partner with all state governments on solar electrification projects in off grid areas. According to him, the Bank’s medium term vision is to ensure 100,000 homes have solar systems in the next 5 years.

Currently, the BOI is gearing to launch another electrification project in Sokoto state. The bank is also providing a N2bn loan to business owners in the state.
