In a press conference held on Sunday in his Bende country home, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, emphasized that the South-east region must prioritize achieving peace and security before demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Kalu rejected the notion that mere vocal demands could secure Kanu's release, advocating for strategic thinking and peaceful negotiations instead. He criticized attempts to arm-twist the federal government through actions like sit-at-home protests, stating that dialogue, not coercion, is the key to success. Kalu further cautioned against threats to burn down the region, asserting that such actions only harm the South-east itself.

In addition, he defended President Bola Tinubu against accusations, urging the region to embrace peace initiatives for lasting stability.

The deputy speaker concluded by calling on gunmen in the region to surrender their arms, expressing hope for federal government amnesty to restore peace.
