In a groundbreaking announcement at the Bishop Kelly Centre, Benin City, Edo State Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu has officially declared his candidacy for the 2024 governorship election under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The homegrown politician, expressing his deep connection with the people and determination to develop the state, asserted his unstoppable momentum in the forthcoming election.

Having worked closely with Governor Godwin Obaseki for the past seven years, Shaibu highlighted their joint efforts in laying the foundation for Edo State's development. He emphasized the need for a more inclusive government and outlined the pillars of his governance, focusing on infrastructure, economic diversification, education, sports and skill development, healthcare, social welfare, agriculture, rural development, and environmental sustainability.

Shaibu, exuding confidence, shared his journey in politics and assured the people that, with their support, he would elevate Edo State to new heights. Despite setbacks and political twists, he remains resolute, citing impressive achievements in revenue generation, sports development, and legislative projects.

The deputy governor's declaration was not without controversy, as the originally scheduled event at Eterno Hotel was abruptly canceled, allegedly due to Governor Obaseki's conflicting program at the venue. The announcement comes amid reported disagreements between Obaseki and Shaibu over the latter's gubernatorial aspirations.

Shaibu urged Edo's traditional rulers, religious leaders, and the public to rally behind him, promising to uphold respect for cultural heritage. As the political landscape in Edo State takes a dramatic turn, Shaibu's bid for the governorship sets the stage for a closely watched electoral contest in 2024.
