The Labour Party has recently voiced its support for the proposed nationwide strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC). The planned strike on October 3 aims to draw the government's attention to remove fuel subsidies and address critical issues.

According to Legit.ng, the Labour Party leadership expressed its support on Wednesday, September 27, criticising the government for its perceived failure to address the challenges faced by Nigerian workers. The decision to back the strike highlights the government's perceived inability to implement policies aimed at alleviating the hardships of the masses, especially after the removal of fuel subsidies.

The NLC and TUC's demands include wage awards, the implementation of palliatives, tax exemptions, allowances for public sector workers, and a review of the minimum wage. Obiora Ifoh, the national publicity secretary of the Labour Party, acknowledged the patience and resilience shown by Nigerian workers and urged party supporters to prepare for a possible extended mass action, stating, "No retreat, no surrender."

The Labour Party's endorsement is a significant boost for the workers, but it remains to be seen if this will translate into a significant shift in Nigerian politics. Additionally, the NLC and TUC have yet to reciprocate this support for the Labour Party, reminding observers that the political landscape can change rapidly.
