Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has provided insight into why he ordered traditional rulers in Oyo State to stand during an event. The incident occurred during the inauguration of two projects in Iseyin, Oyo State, where Obasanjo was the special guest of honor. In a video circulated online, Obasanjo expressed displeasure at the seated monarchs' failure to rise and greet the state governor, Seyi Makinde, considering it a sign of disrespect.

Speaking in Yoruba, Obasanjo ordered the monarchs to stand and greet Governor Makinde, and they complied. However, this action has drawn widespread criticism, with some accusing Obasanjo of disrespecting Yoruba culture.

The Oluwo of Iwo, Abdulrosheed Akanbi, rebuked Obasanjo for his actions, stating that respect should be earned and not demanded. He emphasized that traditional rulers deserve respect and called for a formal letter of apology from the former president.

Obasanjo, in response, explained that he acted because he believed the monarchs displayed disrespect for Governor Makinde. He emphasized the importance of respecting protocols and the constitution, stating that respect begets respect, and authorities, including the governor, should be treated with respect regardless of status or age.

He stressed that while he respects culture and tradition, the constitution places leaders in specific roles that must be observed and respected.
