Members of the Nigerian National Assembly, both in the Green and Red Chambers, have commenced the reception of Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs), with the final batch scheduled to arrive by December. This decision by the National Assembly leadership to procure imported SUVs for lawmakers and bulletproof vehicles for principal officers has ignited public criticism. Citizens accuse lawmakers of insensitivity to the country's economic struggles.

Various rights organizations, including the Human Rights Writers Association and the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, have condemned the acquisition of these luxury vehicles at a time when many Nigerians struggle to afford basic necessities, and critical infrastructure deteriorates.

In response, the Senate defended the purchase, emphasizing that the vehicles are essential for legislative operations. Priority was given to female lawmakers, individuals with disabilities, and members without pending court cases. Measures were also put in place to ensure that lawmakers do not sell the vehicles, asserting their status as National Assembly property.

The controversial procurement of these vehicles continues, with members receiving them in stages to support their legislative duties, despite public scrutiny and debate
