The Rivers State Government has commenced the demolition of the state House of Assembly complex, purportedly for renovation. Video footage captures bulldozers dismantling the building from the roof down to the ground.

The government justifies this decision, citing structural defects resulting from a recent explosion and fire incident that left the main building unsafe for use.

The October fire, occurring amid rumors of Governor Sim Fubara's impeachment, raised questions about potential political motivations. Complicating matters, 27 lawmakers loyal to Ex-Governor Wike defected to the All Progressives Congress on Monday, citing division within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

The PDP, in response, calls for fresh elections in the 27 vacant State Constituencies.

The Rivers State Commissioner for Information, Joseph Johnson, emphasizes the need for professional advice on the building's integrity after the attack, as the government provides an alternative venue for legislative affairs during the reconstruction period.

The situation unfolds amidst broader political and structural challenges, sparking concerns over the true intentions behind the demolition.
