The National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, has strongly opposed the newly imposed tax regime by the Department of Quality Assurance under the FCT Education Secretariat.

In a letter addressed to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, NAPPS Chairperson Rukayat Agboola expressed apprehension that the tax hike would exacerbate the number of out-of-school children in the region.

The tax system, outlined by the Directorate of Quality Assurance, imposes significant financial burdens on private schools regardless of their location within the FCT.

The memo from the Head of Account, Mudi Muhammed, indicates a change in operational charges effective January 1, 2024, with schools billed based on tuition and enrollment numbers.

The Association voiced concerns over the potential strain on schools and parents, warning of a possible surge in out-of-school children due to economic hardships.

Despite efforts to engage with authorities and advocate against the tax, the approval of the measure has sparked dismay among private school proprietors, prompting an urgent appeal to the Minister for intervention.
