Sports 2015 AFCON Update: Equatorial Guinea & Congo through to the last 8, Gabon & Burkina Faso out

Hosts Equatorial Guinea and Congo have become the first two teams to qualify for the quarterfinals of the 2015 African Nations Cup tournament.

In the other way round, both Burkina Faso and Gabon became the first two countries to exit the competition.

Apparently what could be considered as a local derby in Africa, Equatorial Guinea defeated neighbours Gabon 2-0 while Congo ensured Burkina Faso got eliminated with a 2-1 victory over the former finalists.

With no clear indication over which team will go through, all the countries came into their last group games on something like a clean slate on Sunday looking for a win.

And for the first time in the competition, all the two matches in a group ended in wins rather the trademark draws witnessed so far.

Javier Balboa netted Equatorial Guinea's first goal before Iban Edu scored a late goal to confirm the victory.

In the other game of the group, Burkina Faso couldn't replicate their feat of 2013 where they made the final and lost to Nigeria.

One of the best performers for Congo Thievy Bifouma set them in motion with the opening goal before Aristide Bancé equalised in the 85th.

However three minutes later Fabrice Ondama netted the winner to seal the victory.
