Three traders including a woman, were on Tuesday brought before an Igbosere Magistrates' Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing 4,400 cartons of Lacasera valued at N4.4 million.

The accused are Ganiyu Adeyemi, 53; Ismail Sulaimon, 39; and a woman, Bola Akaemenwa, 49.

Adeyemi is a resident of No. 41, Grifith St., Lagos Island, Sulaimon lives at No. 4, Adepegba St., Agege, Lagos, while Akaemenwa resides at No. 1, Clem Ohia Close, Mangoro, Agege.

The accused are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

The prosecutor, ASP Charles Odii told the court that the traders committed the offences with others still at large on Jan. 15 at Mile 2, Lagos.

He said Akaemenwa and Sulaimon stole 4,400 cartons of Lacasera valued at N4. 4 million belonging to Lacasera Nigeria Ltd.

According to him, the drinks were being transported in an articulated vehicle to a depot in Makurdi, Benue, before they were stolen.

``Adeyemi, the first accused, aided some unknown persons to steal the drinks in transit.’’

The offences, Odii noted, contravened Sections 285 (5), (b) and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 (5) and (b) prescribe a seven-year imprisonment for anyone convicted of stealing goods in transit, while Section 409 provides two years jail term for conspiracy.

The traders, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Magistrate, Mrs O.O. Olanipekun, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

The case was adjourned to Oct. 8 for mention.
