Sports Arsenal unlikely to sign any player this transfer window - Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that there is a possibility they will not be making any new signing this transfer window.

It was expected that Arsenal would turn to the market this window to reinforce in attack following the injury to Theo Walcott, and also as a back for Olivier Giruod.

"It's looks unlikely that we will sign anyone. We are not close to anything," Wenger told reporters.

"If something exceptional turns up of course we will do it."

Short term plans were mooted as Arsenal were believed to be gunning to sign either Dimitar Berbatov or Mirko Vucinic, all being refuted by Wenger.

They have equally been linked with a move Schalke 04's Julian Draxler, but it has not materialised.

Meanwhile Wenger has expressed shock that Chelsea could be selling Juan Mata to Manchester United.

"Yes I am [suprised] because Juan Mata is a great player, and they are selling great player to a direct opponent," he said.

"[It] opens up the opportunities in this transfer market because Chelsea have already played twice against Man Utd and so don't play them again anymore," he added.

"United could have sold him last week but it opens at least the dates of this transfer window. Some teams have already played twice against one opponent and some others not and I think if you want to respect the fairness for everybody - exactly the same - that should not happen.

"I wouldn't go as far as that, [Chelsea selling Mata to do damage to rivals] I just think you would want that everybody is at the same level. I can understand completely what Chelsea are doing, it's within the rules but maybe the rules should be adapted for fairness."
