A fuel fire, which raged through Friday night into independence day, consumed five tankers at the Petroleum Tankers Park, Ekpan, Uvwie local government area of Delta State.
The inferno also damaged part of a building sharing fence with the tankers’ park, forcing residents to vacate their homes.
An eyewitness narrated: “It started 7pm on Friday when a tanker carrying petrol went up in flames while trans-loading it’s content to another tanker.
“Some people said it was ignited by cigarette that was not properly put off by a smoker. The fire would have consumed over 300 tankers if not for the swift intervention by drivers and by-passers.”
