Former Minister of Education, Prof. Chinwe Obaji, on Wednesday urged the Federal Government to end the prolonged Polytechnics and Colleges of Education lecturers' strikes.

Obaji spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos on the strikes which have been on since the last quarter of 2013.

The lecturers, under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) and Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) are on strike over discrimination against holders of Higher National Diploma.

They also want a full implementation of the Consolidated Tertiary Institution Salary Structure (CONTISS 15) among other demands.

``I feel that government should try and sit down with the striking lecturers and find a permanent solution to whatever issue that is tabled before them,” Obaji said.

According to the former minister, the consequences of students staying away from schools will not only impact on them and their parents, but the entire society.

She said, ``For Nigeria to meet up with its quest for technological advancement, it is only logical that attention is given to these arms of the education sector as quickly as possible.”
